Compassion Fatigue? Not With Jesus Dear Friends of Mission of Joy—Greetings to you in Jesus Name! No one can dispute that the world has recently been inundated with news of great catastrophes around the world. The cyclone disaster in Myanmar and earthquake in China has left more than a hundred thousand dead or missing. Hundreds of thousands more are in danger as relief agencies attempt to provide aid. Beyond these two, our own nation continues to struggle with destructive tornado cycles and what weather experts say will be the biggest hurricane season in years. Added to these troubles a shaky economy and rising inflation, the media have begun to talk about what they call “compassion fatigue.” This phenomenon occurs when people are confronted with too many disasters and are numbed and unable to feel compassion. The result is people no longer send help. For those who serve in the name of Jesus, this should not be the case because Jesus is our example and our SOURCE of strength. I recently read the first chapter of Mark. I was struck by how many people pressed in to Jesus seeking his help. After doing many miracles, and preaching in many places, he retired to the home of Simon and Andrew. When they came in to rest, they were told that Simon’s mother-in-law was sick with fever. Immediately, Jesus got up and went to her and healed her. She got up and served Jesus and the disciples dinner. At this point, I’m sure they were ready to rest. Yet, that night, THE ENTIRE town gathered at their door and brought ALL the sick and demon possessed. Jesus patiently met every need. When we serve in Jesus name, we do so with Him as our example. We also serve drawing upon His resources trusting Him to replenish both our strength and the financial resources we expend in His name. His resources are absolutely infinite. We never have to worry about running out of compassions, for His well is deeper than we know. Isn’t that good news? God bless and keep you! Jeff O’Leary Director, Mission of Joy
